Examination period is usually a tough one for Nigerian students as the level of seriousness and focus is always of high priority. Individual students have a different level of approach to how they prepare and study for their exams in order to perform excellently at the end of the semester. Here are the 11 popular ways Nigerian students prepare for exams.

1. Tutorials.

A tutorial is a class usually organized by students to teach themselves on the area of concentration, for them to understand better what the lecturer taught them in class. Tutorial class is common during the examination period as the students unite to study together. During the tutorial class, the students will treat past questions and class work while preparing for the exams.

2. Night Class.

Many students have adopted night class as a way of preparing for exams. The student will go to lecture halls at night to read alone or in groups with other students. While some students hate night class, other Nigerian students see night class as the best way to study for their exams.

3. Night Study.

Night study is an exam preparation approach whereby individual students’ study in their rented apartment, whether alone or in groups. Some students prefer to study alone in their hostel, while others will invite their friends to study together at night. Night study seems to be the most effective way of preparing for exams among Nigerian students because there are less distractions.

4. Library Chiefs.

This category of students prefers to prepare for exams at the school library. They do not like night class or group study; rather, they study in the school library with other students who they share common interests with.

5. In God We Trust.

Nigerian students prepare for exams by hoping on God. This category of students are religious; they fast during examinations. They believe that staying holy, fasting, and praying during the exam period will pave the way for them to perform excellently. The funniest part about this approach is that the students will still go back to their former lifestyle after the examination.

Even those who have never stepped foot in church for decades will be sighted on the eve of their examination to pray. Some of them also believe in magic pens; they take their pens to church or mosque to pray. Many students do use this approach as a way of preparing for exams.

6. The Otondos.

The Otondos are a category of students who love to score good grades but hate studying. They do not read nor prepare for exams; instead, they depend on their friends and other students in the exam hall for answers, while some of them also rely on expos or microchips with the intent to cheat during the exams.

The Otondos sometimes do not get caught because they appear to be professional at what they do. Many students make use of this approach to prepare for exams. While their friends are busy studying, they will be thinking about how to carry expo to the exam hall.

7. Zero Online Presence.

Nigerian students are not always online during the examination period. This is to avoid distraction so as to remain focused. Some of the students will not renew their internet subscription, while others will shut down their social media activity until the exams are over.

8. Last-Minute Preparation.

Some polytechnics and university students only study when the exam is less than a day or two away. These students may not have a notebook, textbook, or handout, so what they do is to snap their coursemate’s notes and gather other materials on their phone in order to use them for their exam preparations. Meanwhile, this is not the best approach because it is not as effective as other approaches.

9. Group Study.

Nigerian students love group study because it strengthens academic growth. Individual students form a group to study together. They teach themselves and share ideas together. It may be a group of 2–5 students or even more. Group study is sweet as one can easily assimilate on time, provided the group is full of serious students.

10. Daylight Study.

Not every student can study overnight when nature calls, thus making the students study at daylight while they rest at night. Perhaps due to the lack of electricity in the country, so many students prepare for exams by studying during daylight.

11. Isolated Places. 

Nigerian students also prepare for examinations in isolated places. This is to avoid distractions from others while studying. Some of the isolated places may be inside a bush, on top of a tree, inside a church or mosque, an uncompleted building, an empty classroom, or lecture halls. The majority of students who prepare for exams in isolated places are serious students who don’t like interference from other students while reading.
